• Recently Thrifted

  Haven’t been hugely successful on my thrifting over the past few weeks, but below are a few notable scores:

  Vintage apron and Weather House purchased at the same estate sale.

  

  Close-up of the weather house. It’s my favorite of the bunch I think. The thermometer displays the temperature, obviously, and the man and woman figures act as a barometer. Right now the room is more humid, so the man is out of the house. Love it!

  Pyrex is slim-pickins around here for some reason. Most of what I find is either in poor condition or too steep for my pocketbook. Here are some divided dishes that were in great shape and affordable! The top is Town and Country and the bottom is Dandelion Duet. (I find all of my pattern info here.) Only one had a lid. I absolutely love these dishes for serving up my sides at the table.   Found one at a garage sale and one at a thrift store.

  

  Below is the cutest little Holly Hobby Friends doll. Her name is Zayre and she’s an 18” holiday doll from 1988.  She’s so stinkin’ cute, and she was practically dangling by her legs in an outside Goodwill bin before I rescued her.  Love that face!

  

  And lastly we have an old Polaroid camera found in a big junk warehouse. You know, the kind of place where you have to step over things to get around and you have to worry about taking stuff off the shelves because everything is piled on top. Hopefully I’ll come across some film for the thing one of these days. We’d love to try it out and let the girls use it. I paid $3 for the camera. Too much? Maybe, but the girls have had so much fun playing with it I’ve surely gotten my money’s worth out of it already.

  

  Well, that’s it for now. I’ve had to put my shirt-making aside after some frustration, but I hope to get back to it within a few days.

  I was able to sneak in an afternoon of thrifting last week and thought I’d share a few of the goodies I picked up.

  First up is a pair of lederhosen! Yes, LEDERHOSEN! I couldn’t believe it. It was marked at $10, but the shop was having a half off sale for pants and capris. What luck. They’re a very soft green leather with metal buckles on the cuffs.

  

  Picked up this pretty little Pyrex bowl at the Salvation Army. The graphics are a little faded, but I really need some more mixing bowls and I still think it’s a pretty little dish.

  

  And finally, I scored these great vintage (looking?) recipe cards in a bit of a Dutch motif. I love them. I despise cooking and I never use recipe cards (hello Allrecipes), but how could I pass these up? There are 25 out of the original 30 cards and they all look perfect.

  Not pictured from my little excursion is a plain white Fire King mug and a bundle of fabric and clothing meant for repurposing.

• Thrifty Loot: Part Deux

  Ok, so I was supposed to post this yesterday. My apologies. I got distracted by Made By Rae’s Itty Bitty Baby Dress. More details about that to come. For now, I will let you take a look into this ultra-fun vintage crafty mag I picked up last weekend…for a quarter!

  

  McCall’s Summer Make-It Ideas from 1966. The book includes just about every kind of crafting medium one can imagine with some nifty ideas all around.

  First off,  I really love this knitted cardigan. It’s hard to see the detail in this photo, but it has cables going down the front and sides. It has such a timeless look, I could probably knit it today and nobody would guess that it was a vintage pattern.

  

  These are really cute. They’re kitchen and craft caddies made from repurposed plastic bottles. They look to be dish-washing liquid containers. This could be a fun project to do with the littles.

  

  Up next are tennis rackets converted into puppets. I always see tennis rackets at the thrift stores priced very inexpensively, but if I were to do this I think I would take it down a few sizes and cover some wooden spoons. So cute. So fun!

  

  One think that I’ve noticed is that putting a face on anything ups the cute factor by leaps and bounds. Aren’t these guys so goofy and totally adorable? Love!

  

  Another project for the kiddos…plastic cups into animals. Lots of variations. Very clever.

  These are place cards and favors for spring parties. My favorites are the macaroni animal place cards. Click picture to enlarge.

  

  Crochet hot pads! See the chicken? Love. Love. Love! My husband pointed out that it looks like the Hickety Pickety hen and I think he’s right. If I ever have a chance to make her she will most definitely make her home at the top there on a new banner. One day.

  

  There are also mobiles, paper stamping ideas, wood rubbings, card making ideas, floral arranging tips, and soooo much more. I wish I could show you more, but with over 100 pages, I had to pick a few of my favorites.

  Things are getting pretty busy around here with a couple of babies due in March and some other ideas that I’ve been working. Be back soon!
