From the “Garden”

I’ve been wanting to plant our own food for a few years now. Unfortunately, neither my husband, nor I, know anything about planting and growing anything. We did manage to grow some sunflowers last year, which was a gentle boost to our confidence, but we were still unsure about the whole thing.

Enter the Earth Box. We didn’t actually use an Earth Box as the were a little too spendy for us, but we did read through a few tutorials on how to make our own (here and here), and things have been going surprising well for our little garden!

Last week we had our first harvest of greens: romaine lettuce and spinach. It was truly one of the best salads I’ve ever eaten (perhaps the sweet taste of victory had a little something to do with it). Yesterday I plucked a few more leaves and found a little fellow who was also enjoying the fruits of our labor.

Sorry, little guy. You’ll have to run along now and find someplace else to dine.

It’s so exciting to see everything growing so well. The tomatoes should be making their arrival very soon!

Although we have had some casualties. The plant above is the only survivor of it’s bin. Its mates included cucumber and zucchini. I’m not sure why the others died, and I didn’t label them so I’m still not 100% sure if this is, indeed, the squash at all.  Only time will tell, and frankly I’m enjoying the excitement of it all so much that it doesn’t really matter what the heck it is anyway!

Happy gardening!
